Statements on Passing of Former FMC Chairman Helen Bentley

Helen Bentley, who served as Chairman of the Federal Maritime Commission from 1969 to 1975, died in Timonium, Maryland on Saturday, August 6, 2016.

Current Chairman of Federal Maritime Commission Mario Cordero and Commissioners Rebecca Dye and William Doyle today issued the below statements in remembrance of Bentley.

Statement of Mario Cordero:

“Helen Bentley was a pioneer in many different fields and industries, but she will forever be remembered for her work on maritime matters. From the newsroom to the Baltimore waterfront, from the halls of Congress to the Chair of the Federal Maritime Commission, she distinguished herself in each and every endeavor she undertook. It is a testament to the fortitude and tenacity that she was known for that she remained an active, forceful, and articulate advocate on shipping and port issues to the very end of her life. It was a privilege to have had the opportunity to know her and I join the many who are saddened by her departure.”

Statement of Rebecca Dye:

“Helen Bentley was a pioneer in the effort to expand the role of women in executive positions in the Federal Government. She was among the first Executive Women in Government, an organization that actively represents the many women executives in Federal service today. I agree with my fellow Commissioners that it was a privilege to know and work with Helen Bentley. She was a powerful advocate for the merchant marine industry, and all of us will miss her greatly.”

Statement of William Doyle:

“I am so fortunate to have known Mrs. Bentley and to have worked with her on maritime projects over the years. She is a true American leader from the Greatest Generation. God bless Helen D. Bentley. You will be missed.”
