Statement of Chairman Maffei on E.O. 14036 & Competition

“I applaud the important work accomplished across the U.S. government in the year since Executive Order 14036, Promoting Competition in the American Economy was issued by President Biden.

“Ensuring competition for ocean liner services is the fundamental mission of the Federal Maritime Commission. Since becoming Chairman, I have directed the Commission to renew its emphasis on law enforcement, initiate new compliance programs, and prioritize public assistance services.  Each of these efforts will bring even more oversight and accountability to the marketplace for ocean transportation services, resulting in more protections and benefits to U.S. consumers and companies.

“The Ocean Shipping Reform Act of 2022 creates welcomed new authorities for the Federal Maritime Commission, enhancing the agency’s abilities to safeguard competition.  I have expressed in an earlier statement my gratitude to President Biden for signing this legislation into law.”
