Meeting of the Federal Maritime Commission—September 21, 2021
The Commission held a closed, non-deliberative meeting under the authority of 46 U.S.C. 303 to discuss operational issues in the international maritime trade in Puerto Rico.
FMC to Issue Guidance on Complaint Proceedings and Seek Comments on Demurrage and Detention Billings
The Federal Maritime Commission voted to move forward with two demurrage-and-detention related initiatives proposed by Commissioner Rebecca F. Dye as part of Fact Finding 29. Unlike Commissioner Dye’s other Interim Recommendations, these initiatives required formal Commission approval.
FMC Announces National Shipper Advisory Committee Membership
The Federal Maritime Commission announced the 24 individuals who will serve on the National Shipper Advisory Committee.
International Shipping Competition Agencies Meet
Federal Maritime Commission Chairman Daniel B. Maffei joined his colleagues from the European Union and the People’s Republic of China for the fifth biennial meeting of the Global Regulatory Summit to discuss competition issues related to the shipping industry.
Chairman Daniel B. Maffei Visits West Coast Ports
Chairman Maffei visited Los Angeles and Long Beach to tour facilities and meet with supply chain participants.
Chairman Maffei Addresses NCBFAA Conference
FMC Chairman Maffei addressed the National Customs Brokers and Freight Forwarders Association of America’s annual Government Affairs Conference, discussing conditions in the trade, Commission actions and initiatives in response to events of the past year, and possible priorities for the agency moving forward.
In early September, Commissioner Carl W. Bentzel met with California-based shippers and supply chain stakeholders, in addition to convening two roundtables on supply chain issues, to explore opportunities for greater efficiencies.
During a recent meeting with chemical distributors, Commissioner Carl W. Bentzel heard concerns about systemic reductions for hazardous materials transportation via ocean.
Commissioner Bentzel convened a series of roundtable discussions in Northern and Southern California. The discussions focused on the myriad of supply chain challenges such as equipment availability, port congestion and U.S. exporter access to global markets. Meets were held in Oakland and Long Beach.
