Commissioner Daniel B. Maffei participates in Maritime Risk Symposium
In mid-November, Commissioner Maffei participated in a panel at the 10th Annual Maritime Risk Symposium at the State University of New York Maritime College in Bronx, New York.
This year’s theme was Understanding and Managing Risks to the Marine Transportation System, and Commissioner Maffei participated in a panel discussion titled Future Issues of Risk within the Marine Transportation System with participants from the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the National Risk Management Center. His presentation focused on the increasing interconnectedness of maritime industry and how this leads to increased risk. He discussed developments in the industry that present potential risks to the system, such as lagging infrastructure, digitization and artificial intelligence, environmental uncertainty, political issues affecting global trade, and state subsidization and protectionism.
