Commissioner Mario Cordero Discusses Sustainable Port Management at the Organization of American States

On November 13, 2012, Federal Maritime Commissioner Mario Cordero participated in a panel discussion at the Organization of American States, on the topic of sustainable port management and environmental protection. Joined by maritime colleagues from the United States Coast Guard, the Port of Miami, Valencia Ports, the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, and the United States national section of the World Association for Waterborne Transport Infrastructure, the Commissioner discussed the role of the Federal Maritime Commission and the importance of sustainable infrastructure development.

Drawing on the experience gained during his service as a Harbor Commissioner at the Port of Long Beach, Commissioner Cordero pointed out several successful examples where development was balanced with environmental protection. His remarks included the Green Port Policy along with the Clean Truck Program pursued by the Port of Long Beach. Both of these policies provide a leading model of environmental stewardship, benefiting not only the port, but the entire community around it.

The Commissioner noted that as environmental considerations become increasingly prevalent within the maritime industry, the FMC stands as an active partner to further best practices related to sustainable development.
