In a ceremony at Port of Baltimore, Commissioner Dye christens new container-roll-on/roll-off vessel
The mixed use container and roll-on/roll-off ship (“con-ro”) M/V Atlantic Star gained a Godmother Friday when Commissioner Rebecca Dye christened the vessel in a ceremony at the Dundalk Marine Terminal in Baltimore.
“During my career in maritime policy, I have been flattered to have been recognized by many different businesses and organizations, but being asked to christen a ship and serve as its ‘godmother’ is a truly distinctive privilege and an unusual honor. I wish the Atlantic Star fair winds and following seas in all her journeys as well as safe voyages and good fortune to all those who sail aboard her as crew,” said Commissioner Dye.
The Atlantic Star is one of five vessels in the new “G4” class of con-ro ships being operated by Atlantic Container Lines (ACL). She has a capacity of 3,800 Twenty Foot Equivalent Units and 1,300 vehicles. The vessel trades between the East Coast of the United States and ports in Europe.
The full text of the remarks made by Commissioner Dye at the christening are as follows:
“During my career, I’ve been fortunate to have had recognition and awards, in my role as Federal Maritime Commissioner. But the opportunity to act as godmother to the Atlantic Star, is personal, and I’m honored that you asked me, Andy Abbot. I understand that HRH Princess Anne christened the Atlantic Sea in Liverpool, so I’m in good company!
I’m sorry my daughter, Caroline, was unable to join us today. But fortunately, Mary Hoang, FMC Chief of Staff and Tyler Wood, Commission General Counsel were able to join me. I appreciate their being here.
To you, and Abbot, thank you for asking me to be godmother to the Atlantic Star. I’ll faithfully discharge my responsibilities to this beautiful ship. And thank you, Andy, for your willingness to always offer business advice and support to me.
The Atlantic Star and her four sister vessels will continue Atlantic Container Lines successful business approach built on multi-purpose ships and personalized customer service.”
